The European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg gave the green light to a proposal from the European Commission to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and fine particulates from the engines, the so-called Euro5 and Euro6. The House adopted what the adjusted result of a compromise within the EU Council (representing governments), which now should just formalize it. © Since this last step is considered granted, the Commission has already announced that from September 2009 will come into force Euro5 standard, good for cars and light commercial vehicles sold in the new EU market.
Among the measures Euro5, a cut of 20% of NOx emissions for engines diesel and 25% for petrol. Furthermore, the engine diesel will have to demolish the 80% the emission of fine particulates, which will make mandatory the application of ad hoc filters.
From 2014 onwards, will enter into force Euro6 standard, which will lead to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides by 68% compared all'Euro5. In a footnote, the Commission stresses that  "the different types of vehicles that have benefited from the more soft emission limits for vans under the standard Euro4 be quickly brought under the more stringent limits for passenger cars under the standard Euro6Â.  "This - the press release goes on in Brussels - would be especially for off-road vehicles and those of up to seven seats including the guidatoreÂ. For so-called Suv will already required by the first match in September 2012 to values more stringent limits in place for cars 2normali. It should be remembered that the Suv not belong to a category of technical-legal vehicles, but are registered as common car, with which often share the engine. Emissions are often overlapping between a sedan and an Suv driven by the same engine, but the added weight means that more heavy vehicles, especially in periods of acceleration, emitting more exhaust pollutants.
According to the Commission, the phase Euro6 Â "lead to an increase in health benefits equal to about 60-90% compared all'Euro5Â.
"The legislation Euro5 and Euro6 - said European Commission Vice President Guenter Verheugen, responsible for Enterprise and Industry - is important for improving the environmental performance of vehicles. At the same time, will not hinder the competitiveness of 'motor vehicle industry the' EU as puà ² counting a reasonable time to adapt to the introduction requisitiÂ. Finally, the legislation provides the dissemination of information to third party repairers of vehicles, to facilitate maintenance and repairs needed to ensure good environmental performance. The dissemination of information, moreover, the Commission explains,  "is important to protect independents, at most small and medium enterprises, the gradual disappearance from the market because of their inability to deal with modern cars without access to information necessarieÂ.
