German billionaire Adolf Merckle has died at age 74, hit by a train not far from Blaubeuren. Merckle, as reported by the newspaper Die Welt, may have committed suicide.
Merckle, owner of the company that makes generic drugs Ratiopharm and shareholder of Heidelberger Cement, was head of a veritable industrial empire. Empire, however, in difficulties. Last year, infati, Merckle had bet on falling stock market under the Volkswagen, losing about 400 million euros.
